Profiling Conor Counihan

Conor Counihan comes from the village of Aghada , he was loyal to his local club with whom he played from 1970 till 1990, during his career, he accumulated 2 All Ireland senior football titles, 4 Munster senior football titles, 1 National league title and 2 All stars. He also won 2 Cork senior football titles with his divisional team East Cork , this was a unique achievement because East Cork is not so well known for football, as hurling is the traditional favourite sport.
Conor Counihan was Cork’s centre half back for almost eight consecutive seasons. Like a determined hunk of rock defying the raging seas, he stood at this important position defending like a badger defends his lair, challenging all comers with fearless intent. He was often seen at his best soloing out of defense with a crouched like style that made it difficult for the opposition to disposses him.
He is classed in the same mould as any of the great center backs of the 19th century to mention a few like Tim Kenneally(Kerry). Sean Meade (Galway), and Kevin Moran (Dublin).
Just over 2 year ago Conor achieved another milestone in his career when he became manager of the Cork senior football team, he took over after turbulent period of unrest between the players and management. We can now look forward to a hungry Cork team under the astute leadership of Counihan to make it to another All Ireland final and hopefully go one better than last year.
