Can Denis Bring Liam Back To The Leeside?

Denis Walsh
Denis Walsh

Today we profile current Cork Hurling manager, Denis has been in the seat for almost a year now , he was elected last spring , after a long and bitter dispute between Cork management and the Senior team players.
During his playing career he accumulated 10 senior Munster titles (4 football ( in a row )& 6 hurling ), 4 All Ireland Senior titles (2 hurling & 2 football) plus 1 league medal. Every one knows about Teddy McCarthy and his achievement as a dual All Ireland medal winner in 1990, Denis Walsh was robbed of this mantle of glory, despite playing on the Cork football team in all the preceding rounds prior to the All Ireland , in the Munster final of that year he played a blinder a right corner back , the previous year he marked Eoin Bomber Liston playing at full back. Walsh played in all three positions of the full back line during Cork’s 4 in a row 1987-1990 I believe that overall Walsh played more game time than Teddy Mac during the course of the championship , why was Denis Walsh not entitled to the All Ireland medal he fully deserved? maybe someone can enlighten me.

Both Conor Counihan and Denis played together on that four in a row team, what are chances that they can bring home Sam & Liam in the same year, Does Walsh possess the same cool qualities attributed to Counihan during the footballers All Ireland run last year , I believe he has, on the playing field, he was always cool whenever been harried by his opponent , combine that with a good mental brain, his man management skills and dedication to the job and we have a man well equipped to deal with an equally dedicated group of players, can he succeed ? I welcome your views.

If memory serves me correctly, Teddy Mc Carthy was injured for the entire Munster championships in both hurling and football that year. When he recovered from injury he was named on both the hurling and football teams, who were both already Munster champions, and played from then on, in both codes.
There was a certain amount of good fortune on his part to begin his playing participation at such an advantageous juncture, on two good teams, who had much of the hard campaign completed.
In the case of Denis Walsh the opposite seems to be the case, in that after winning the hurling, he was surprisingly dropped ‘at the last minute’, before the football final.
