To coincide with World Clean Up Day, Cork GAA is calling all hurling, football, camogie and ladies football clubs across Cork to get involved in a Community Clean Up Day.

Everyone is welcome – don your team colours and pitch in!

Our hurling, football, camogie and ladies football clubs are sustained by their communities where the passion for our games is passed from one generation to the next, and we must ensure we pass on the planet in a stronger position to the next generation.

The Cork GAA Community Clean Up Day initiative aims to promote community engagement, environmental awareness, and pride in our shared spaces.

On this day, players, coaches, officials, supporters, and wider communities will unite to clean up various locations across Cork City and County. Our mission? To collect and properly dispose of large volumes of waste, fostering a cleaner, healthier environment.

The event takes place on the Saturday following World Clean Up Day, which falls on Friday, September 20th September, an initiative that has grown into the largest civic movement in human history, bringing together 211 countries and territories with 91 million volunteers dedicated to creating a cleaner planet.

Use our Guidance Document to help organise a clean up event in your community and keep everyone safe. Download it to get started!

We are delighted to partner with Cork Camogie and Ladies football boards, along with An Taisce, Cork City Council and Cork County Council with this initiative and thank them for their support.

The event is supported as part of the Waste Enforcement Regional Lead Authorities (WERLAs) as part of their 2024 Anti-Dumping Initiative.

No, everyone in the community is welcome and encouraged to join in.

All club secretaries will receive an invitation to register and details of the event from Cork GAA, LGFA or Camogie Association. Please reach out to your club management for further information.

Where there are a number of adult, underage, ladies football and camogie teams, which may be registered as different clubs but share the same facilities, we would ask all to get together but one team to take the lead in registering and coordinating the event in your area.

  • Each cleaning kit will contain a number of refuse and recycling bags, gloves, hi-vis vests and litter pickers.
  • Unfortunately, we will not be able to provide enough items for every volunteer but we encourage clubs to collaborate with other community groups such as Tidy Towns who may also have some kit that they are willing to share.

Each club will decide on the areas to focus within their communities

This will be for each club to decide and communicate to their group but we recommend approximately two hours in duration.

  • Only waste collected during the Clean Up Day will be accepted.
  •  Two different coloured bags will be provided in the kits, one for general waste and one for recyclables.
  • Clubs are also encouraged to avail of the Re-turn scheme for suitable plastic bottles and aluminium cans.
